Underwater Camera Housing

Best Underwater Camera Housing

In Photography Equipment, Underwater Photography by Stefano CaioniLeave a Comment

Underwater camera housings are essentially what makes underwater photography accessible and subsequently doable for the lot of us who can’t afford to splurge on specialty waterproof cameras.

In fact, depending on the type of camera you’re working with, you can get housings for as low as 50 bucks for the basic (but still effective) models. Higher-end units go for thousands of dollars and offer superior functionality in addition to water resistance.

Underwater Camera Housing

With so much variety in the market, selecting a suitable underwater camera housing can be disconcerting, more so if you’re new to the whole thing. So, I decided to include a simplified buying guide to hopefully serve as a lead when you decide to hit the market.

What to Look For When Buying an Underwater Camera Housing

It’s important to keep a few things in mind when looking for an underwater camera housing for your DLSR or mirrorless. First of all, check the compatibility of a camera housing with your camera. Unfortunately, not all camera brands make their own underwater housing.

Control System

Some housings will only give you access to the most essential controls, mostly those involved in capturing photos. Other non-essential, yet potentially useful controls are left out as a cost cutting measure. Hence, when looking to buy a certain housing, be sure to check the buyer reviews and assorted videos to see which controls are included and which are not.

Functionality

It is also important to check how the available buttons are spaced, which will further tell you how easy they are to operate. Ideally, the buttons should be large (especially the shutter button) and well spaced as opposed to small and cramped together.

Material

Camera housings are mostly made from two materials – aluminum and polycarbonate. The latter are usually cheaper and lighter, but have lower depth ratings. Aluminum housings, on the other hand, are quite expensive but have much deeper depth limits, and offer maximum protection against knocks and drops.

Depth Rating

As you will see, each housing comes with a depth rating that indicates the maximum depth at which it can offer full protection. Only buy a camera housing whose depth rating is within the depths you plan ongoing. Exceeding the depth indicated may cause the housing to leak or malfunction.
